Birke vs Sato: Tokyo Cityscape Battle

Birke vs Sato: Tokyo Cityscape Battle

Thomas Birke is a photographer from Germany who is “fascinated by life in metropolitan areas … neon signs, rooftops and public video screens.” As such, he travels around densely populated areas (in this case, ) taking photos at night from fire escapes. Sato Shintaro is a Japanese photographer who takes photographs at night of from … the fire escapes of multi-tenant buildings. This is an Epic Super Happy Battle, so follow the jump for their respective galleries and let us know who you think the winner is! For me, I feel like the winner, because after visiting I fell helplessly in love with the place, and seeing these photos is like seeing photos of my wife and kids (assuming I had either).

I think I have a slight leaning towards Sato. For the color quality of his images and the city. Image 9 is such a contrast to the hyper planed communities of America with their straight lines, every neighbor’s front door step aligned perfectly.
