HUSH Solo Show on the West Coast

The Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is having the first US solo exhibition of work by UK artist HUSH, entitled Hymn to Beauty. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 from 7.00pm – 10.00pm, with the artist in attendance. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, March 26th 2009 from 1.00pm -7.00pm.

Hush is stimulated, influenced and driven by his cross cultural experiences. Having trained as a graphic designer and illustrator at Newcastle School of Art and Design, his work has taken him across Asia and Europe, whilst simultaneously developing his prominence as a contemporary artist. His fascination with Asian graphic novels is juxtaposed with inspiration from the likes of Mimmo Rotella, Lichtenstein and Sir Peter Blake, creating a unique style that has led to worldwide acclamation.

For Immediate Release: Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present Hymn to Beauty, the first US solo exhibition of work by UK artist HUSH. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 from 7.00pm – 10.00pm, with the artist in attendance. Work in the show will include Acrylic Paint, Screen Print, Spray Paint, Ink, and Tea on Canvas and Wood as well as a site specific installation. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, March 26th 2009 from 1.00pm -7.00pm.

Hush’s work has been described as a sensory assault of shape, color, and character.  Inspired by the portrayal of the female form in art, the artist builds up and tears down layers of paint and images as he works, “letting the canvas and marks take their own path.”  The result is an enigmatic synthesis of anime, pop-infused imagery, graffiti, and graphic design that exposes the conflict between power and decay, innocence and sexuality, and the fusion of Eastern and Western culture.

Hush continues to evolve his style with this latest batch of pieces, which merges his early anime and pop-art influenced graffiti technique with an exploration of Romanesque iconographic imagery. The new works are bigger, deeper and richer than anything he has produced to date.

“Hush is a powerful voice in today’s art world, one of the few artists who we have no doubt will survive the recession and continue to sell. In fact, pieces are already selling and we don’t even have all the images yet”, says Carmichael Gallery co-curator Seth Carmichael. “Although Hush comes from a graffiti and street art background I would compare him more to Lichtenstein than to Banksy, but like Banksy he is part of the same global movement. He is one of the new British artists to watch.”

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present Seiva Bruta, the first West Coast solo exhibition of work by Brazilian artist Flip. Artwork featured in the exhibition will include acrylic, ink and mixed media on wood, canvas, and paper as well as a site specific installation. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 from 7.00pm – 10.00pm with Flip in attendance.  The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, March 26th, 2009 from 1.00pm – 7.00pm.

In Seiva Bruta, Flip continues his exploration of the natural world and the relationships that exist within it. In this new body of work, he interprets plant sap as the blood of plants, comparing and contrasting it with the blood of animals.

“I make a parallel between the fluid and the blood,” comments Flip. “Nerves, veins, and roots.feelings, diseases, patterns all mixed up.”

With an environmentally-flavored color palette and textural variations created by a unique approach to Asian calligraphy, Flip offers a fresh,
intuitive voice to the international contemporary art scene.
