I just got back from Austin and I’m about to head to class. Doing a model shoot tonight (no idea who the model is). Aside from that, it’s been a really slow day for the visual arts. Good article over at boston.com discussing Shepard Fairey and the history of artists appropriating preexisting work. Its a very timely and poignant article and well worth your time if you have ever found yourself questioning the legitamacy of artwork like Shepard Faireys.
Why would Shepard Fairey, or any other artist, want to copy an image that is already out there and claim it as his own? Why would he think he could get away with it?

The contemporary art market, with its abiding reputation for foggy deals and puffy values, is a vulnerable organism, traditionally hit early and hard by economic malaise. That’s what’s happening now. Sales are vaporizing. Careers are leaking air. Chelsea rents are due. The boom that was is no more.
