Something of significant note is that Damien Hirst seems to be aware of his impending demise (around the 3:04 mark and on). He’s undoubtedly aware that he got away with something outrageous–125 million times over–and he more than likely wants to escape the very image, and subsequent fantasy of a life, that he himself created.
Art historians take note: The true genius of Damien Hirst is that he has, to his utmost awareness, created an outstandingly lavish critique on the idiocy of the contemporary art market by selling them a mass of worthless absurdity. This absurdity in Damien’s work (and in his prices), is a reflection of the absurdity of the art market, and more importantly, it is a reflection of the absurdity of the buyer.
Damien Hirst didn’t kill the art market, the art market killed its self. Damien was merely the narrator.
