Photographer Spotlight: Erwin Blumenfeld

Erwin Blumenfeld (1897 – 1969) was a German born American photographer who worked primarily in the world of Fashion. Undoubtedly one of the most influential fashion photographers of the early 20th century, Blumenfeld’s work helped to bring about a new level of creative artistry to the photographic medium.

Despite no formal connections to surrealism, heavy influences from the movement are readily apparent in the majority of Blumenfeld’s work (which is unsurprising, given the movement’s popularity during the time). Unfortunately, while most people are familiar with the surrealist art work and photography of Man Ray, Blumenfeld’s name is not nearly as well known; despite both of them working during basically the same time period.

While looking at Blumenfeld’s work, keep in mind that his images are generally separated into two groups: his personal work, which was primarily done in black and white, and his commercial work which was primarily done in color.

Photographer Spotlight: Guy Bourdin

Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) was perhaps the single most important photographer in the history of fashion photography. As a protégé of the legendary Man Ray, Bourdin made huge waves in the fashion world with his seductive, provocative, and at times violent imagery. His work is often credited with being the first to bring a real narrative to the world of fashion photography, something that now seems almost intrinsic to the medium.

In 1955, Bourdin took a job at Vogue Paris–a job that he held until 1987–working alongside the great Helmut Newton.

While Guy Bourdin may not be as well known as his colleague at Vogue Paris, it is certainly arguable that Bourdin’s work has had a more noticeable and lasting influence on the current generation of fashion photographers. To this day you can still see striking similarities between Bourdin’s work and the likes of Miles Aldridge, David LaChapelle and Terry Richardson.

I am absolutely in love with the work of Alvaro Puentes. Working out of Chile, Alvaro says he is inspired by people and the beauty he finds in everyday life. Interestingly, Alvaro also tells us that he hates being regarded as an artist; “I think I’m just a photographer. I love fire, I love women, and I have a very political-punk vision of the world.” Sounds fantastic. As a side note, the Photographer Spotlight series is back.

Guido Argentini is an Italian born fine art photographer (that’s a rather loose categorization, by the way) known mostly for his studies of women. You’ve probably seen his “Silver” series making its way around the internet lately, so aside from that I thought we’d try to highlight some of his other works as well. NSFW gallery after the jump.

Guido Argentini was born in Florence, Italy. He studied Medicine for three years at the university of Florence. At 23 he decided to turn his passion for photography into a profession and started to shoot fashion and beauty. Since 1990 he has lived in the USA, in Los Angeles.

As a photographer Chris has completed national and international campaigns for Levis, Mooks, Mambo, Sony Music, Bonds, Stussy, Insight, Modular Records, Volcom, DC Shoes and a number of magazine titles, including The Sunday Magazine, Vice, Intersection, Oyster, Nylon and Japans ‘Beikoku Ongaku’. As a director Chris has completed full production on a cinema commercial for the General Pants Clothing Group, directed and shot a series of 3 commercials for Nike, station idents for World Movies/SBS and an aria commercial for Triple J. Chris is a founding partner and currently works as both co-Editor and Photographer of the arts/design title Monster Children.
