Thomas Birke is a photographer from Germany who is “fascinated by life in metropolitan areas … neon signs, rooftops and public video screens.” As such, he travels around densely populated areas (in this case, Tokyo) taking photos at night from fire escapes. Sato Shintaro is a Japanese photographer who takes photographs at night of Tokyo from … the fire escapes of multi-tenant buildings. This is an Epic Super Happy Battle, so follow the jump for their respective galleries and let us know who you think the winner is! For me, I feel like the winner, because after visiting Tokyo I fell helplessly in love with the place, and seeing these photos is like seeing photos of my wife and kids (assuming I had either).

Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky defines ‘epic’ in images. He has made a name for himself observing human industry against natural beauty, touring China’s Three Gorges Dam project, Italy’s marble quarries, and more recently large-scale open pit copper mining operations in Western Australia.
There are two reasons why I love Edward Burtynsky’s work. One, he shows us the Earth in ways very few others have, and secondly, he still finds something aesthetically appealing about all the ugliness that he photographs. He isn’t simply a documentary photographer; he is an artist, but he is also a conservationalist, and he uses his artistic ability to bring awareness to the issues on his mind. It’s poetic in a way.
If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and go watch his Manufactured Landscapes documentary and have your mind blown.
Edward Burtynsky has a new exhibition going on January 9th to February 7tg at the Flowers East gallery.
UPDATE: This post comes fresh on the heels of a NASA scientist declaring that “Australia is destroying life on Earth.” Coincidence?

Emma Summerton is a fashion photographer who has shot for basically everyone: 10, Agent Provocateur, Arena, Big, Dazed & Confused, Nylon, Ryoko Tsushin, Self Service, Strenesse, Terry De Havilland, Vogue, Yves Saint Laurent, et al. Her photographs use a lovely combination of color and texture to create an almost palatable ambiance.
Her works also have a rather Cindy Sherman like video quality about them, as you’ll see in the photograph after the jump.

Bren Bataclan’s cheerful cartoon creatures have been exhibited in some high places: at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, in Logan International Airport and even on a Girl Scout patch.
But lately he’s been leaving his artwork outside unemployment offices and closed-down retail stores across the country bearing the note: “Everything is Going to Be Alright – This Painting is Yours to Take.”
